Being and Time

Human existence is being-in-the-world: practical involvement, care, finite possibilities, and temporality rather than detached observation.

Heidegger investigates Being through Dasein, the kind of existence for which its own being is an issue. People already inhabit a meaningful world of activities and relationships before they adopt a theoretical observer's stance.

You usually notice a door through entering, not by listing its properties. Heidegger begins with that involved relationship to the world, before the detached description that philosophy often takes for granted.

Tools are ordinarily encountered through use, and the world is disclosed through practical involvement. Understanding, mood, and discourse reveal a situation rather than simply adding subjective decoration to neutral facts.

Care describes existence as already situated, oriented toward possibilities, and involved with things. Public expectations can absorb a person into anonymous ways of thinking and acting.

Anxiety, conscience, and being-toward-death expose finite possibilities and make a more owned form of existence possible. Temporality integrates what has been, present involvement, and projected possibilities.

The published work remains unfinished. Authenticity is not a simple self-help ideal, and interpretation must also confront Heidegger's political commitments rather than treating the philosophy as historically detached.

Owning a life does not mean escaping everyone else's influence. It means recognising that a limited set of possibilities is yours to answer for, rather than simply repeating public expectations.

A broken tool makes explicit relations normally absorbed in practical activity.

Moods disclose a situation rather than merely colouring neutral information.

Being-with others belongs to existence before particular friendships are chosen.

Thrownness names circumstances not selected by the person who inhabits them.

Possibility concerns how a life projects itself beyond present facts.
