Relativity

Space and time became related physical measurements, not an identical background for everyone.

Einstein's special relativity of 1905 replaced assumptions about absolute simultaneity with relations between measurements made in different inertial frames of reference.

Two colleagues can disagree about which distant events count as simultaneous without either having a defective clock. Relativity supplies a rule for translating between their measurements. This is structured disagreement, unlike simply declaring that everyone's account is equally good.

Observers in relative motion can disagree about lengths and elapsed times while following the same physical laws and measuring the same vacuum light speed.

These differences are not merely optical delays or mistaken watches. The theory specifies how measurements relate after signal travel has been accounted for.

General relativity, developed to its field equations in 1915, described gravity through spacetime geometry rather than simply adding another force to special relativity.

Mass and energy affect that geometry. Planetary motion, light deflection, and changing clock rates provided ways to compare its predictions with observations.

A phone's navigation service depends on accurate satellite timing, even though its user never notices relativistic effects during a walk. An unfamiliar theory can become ordinary infrastructure while everyday language about minutes and distances remains perfectly serviceable.

Earlier work by Lorentz, Poincare, Maxwell, and others shaped the problems Einstein addressed. Mathematical collaborators and later experiments also mattered to acceptance.

The change unsettled apparently obvious categories and expanded cosmology. It did not establish that all opinions are equally correct or that truth is arbitrary.

Precision timing and satellite navigation later made relativistic corrections useful outside specialist laboratories. Most ordinary calculations still work well with simpler approximations.

Benefits depend on technological infrastructure, whose ownership can distribute power unevenly. A correct physical theory does not itself guarantee equitable access to its applications.

Everyday schedules, commitments, and causal responsibility persisted. The scientific lesson concerns precise relations between perspectives, not permission to abandon standards of evidence.
