Dark City
Memory and environment shape identity, making freedom depend on more than private will.
The film imagines identity as something influenced by memory, place, and social arrangement. If those conditions are controlled, personal will may be real yet constrained by a system that decides which choices seem available.
Memory is important but not sufficient to define a person. Relationships and present decisions also matter, while records of the past can be altered or interpreted by those with power.
The constructed city operates as a metaphor for social systems that shape perception. It should not be mistaken for evidence that ordinary reality is secretly fabricated; the analogy helps ask who controls the conditions of knowledge.
Freedom becomes more than discovering a hidden truth. It requires the capacity to act with others, contest the structure, and build alternatives rather than merely occupying a new assigned identity.

Which options in my life feel natural only because someone else designed the conditions around them?
