Drive My Car

Listening, performance, and grief challenge the wish to fully understand another person.

The film uses performance as a way to approach speech that remains difficult to own. Rehearsal does not reveal a single hidden truth; it creates a structure in which people can listen to words from more than one position.

Grief is not resolved by discovering every motive. The desire for a complete explanation can keep a person tied to what cannot be known, while attention to the present makes a different kind of relation possible.

Driving and listening create an unusual intimacy in which one person is not always required to answer. Care may involve making space for silence without treating it as permission to invent another person's meaning.

The film suggests that understanding is partial and relational. Art can make that partiality bearable without pretending it has converted loss into a lesson.

Can I listen to someone without turning their silence into a story that makes my own uncertainty easier?
