Viceroy Butterfly
Its resemblance to monarch butterflies can influence how predators respond.
The Biological Miracle: Viceroy butterflies share orange-and-black wing patterns with monarchs. The relationship is more complex than a simple harmless copy: both may be distasteful to predators, and the protective benefit of resemblance can vary by region and predator experience.
The Philosophical Mirror: Resemblance is powerful because recognition is learned. A predator's memory becomes part of the butterfly's defense, showing that survival can depend on the expectations one leaves in another mind.
The Human Takeaway: Reputation also travels through resemblance, sometimes protecting and sometimes unfairly burdening people. When I judge someone by the group they appear to belong to, what have I mistaken for evidence about the individual?
