Elephant Tool Use and Social Memory
Elephants modify objects and show complex social behavior shaped by long lives.
The Biological Miracle: Elephants use branches to swat insects, manipulate objects, and interact with their environment. They also show complex social behavior and long-term memory, though claims about grieving or burial should be described with care and evidence.
The Philosophical Mirror: A large, social animal experiences the world through relationships that extend across time. Intelligence includes remembering places and companions, not only solving a puzzle in a laboratory.
The Human Takeaway: We often recognize another mind only when it behaves in a way we understand. What signs of memory, care, or intention might I overlook because they do not resemble human customs?
