Coconut Octopus
Some octopuses carry coconut shells or other portable objects for later shelter.
The Biological Miracle: The coconut octopus has been observed carrying coconut shell halves and assembling them as shelter when needed. This behavior is notable because the animal transports an object for later use rather than using it only in the moment.
The Philosophical Mirror: Preparation means acting in the present for a future that is uncertain. The octopus's portable refuge makes foresight visible without requiring us to claim it imagines the future exactly as a human does.
The Human Takeaway: We also carry resources, habits, and relationships that may become shelter later. What am I preserving now because it could help me or someone else through a future I cannot predict?
