Slow Loris
A glandular secretion combines with saliva to create a medically significant bite.
The Biological Miracle: Slow lorises have a brachial gland near the elbow that produces a secretion. When mixed with saliva, it can contribute to a venomous bite and provoke serious reactions; the details and effects vary among species and circumstances.
The Philosophical Mirror: A gentle-looking face does not guarantee harmlessness, just as a defensive capability does not make an animal malicious. Meaning depends on context, not on the emotions its appearance evokes in us.
The Human Takeaway: I may confuse gentleness with permission to approach. What boundaries should I respect even when someone or something appears calm and inviting?
