Kleiber's Law

Basal metabolic rate often scales sublinearly with body mass across many animals.

The Mechanism: Kleiber's law describes an empirical relationship in which basal metabolic rate scales approximately with body mass to a three-quarter power across many animals. The exponent and fit vary across groups, measurement methods, and theories.

The Philosophical Pivot: A power law can reveal shared constraints across bodies of very different sizes. It does not mean every organism follows an identical metabolic clock or that biology obeys one simple formula.

The Horizon: Scaling laws help scientists connect individual physiology with ecological patterns, but applying them requires attention to species, temperature, activity, and context.

A mathematical regularity can be powerful while remaining approximate. Precision in interpretation means knowing where the relationship bends or breaks.

The equation helps us see connection across scale without erasing the diversity of living forms.

A pattern across life can be real without being a rule that every life obeys exactly.

When I see a powerful average, which individual or species might disappear if I treat it as universal?
