Optimal Foraging Theory

Foraging models predict how animals may balance food value against search and handling costs.

The Mechanism: Optimal foraging theory models how an animal might allocate effort among searching, handling food, and managing risk to improve energy gain. Actual behavior depends on uncertainty, learning, competition, and many goals beyond calories.

The Philosophical Pivot: A model can describe patterns that resemble optimization without implying conscious calculation. The environment and organism together produce behavior that may be efficient under some constraints.

The Horizon: The framework helps researchers generate predictions, but it can become misleading if every behavior is retroactively called optimal. A theory should risk being wrong by specifying what evidence would contradict it.

Human decisions are especially difficult to reduce to energy return because culture, meaning, fairness, and identity shape what people value.

An action can make sense within a constraint without being the best imaginable choice.

A pattern can look optimized without any creature doing the optimizing consciously.

When I call a behavior irrational, what goal or constraint might I have failed to understand?
