Availability Cascade

Repeated claims can become more salient and seem more credible through public discussion.

The Mechanism: An availability cascade is a self-reinforcing process in which repetition increases the prominence of a belief, and its prominence encourages further expression. Social signals can make a claim seem more widely accepted than evidence warrants.

The Philosophical Pivot: Public attention and truth are related but not identical. A concern may spread because it is accurate, emotionally compelling, socially rewarded, or some combination.

The Horizon: Media systems can amplify cascades, but discussion can also surface overlooked problems. The task is to preserve routes for correction and evidence as a claim gains visibility.

Dismissing a popular concern as mere contagion can be as mistaken as assuming repetition proves it true. Each claim deserves examination in its own context.

A belief can become familiar before it becomes justified.

Repetition can make a claim feel established before anyone asks what establishes it.

If I had heard this claim only once, what evidence would I require before believing it?
